Measuring the smile — in motion, in context, with evidence.

I am Dr. Dalal Abdulmohsen AlRossais, a Saudi orthodontist and Lecturer at the University of Sharjah College of Dentistry. My doctoral research develops an interpretable, AI-assisted index for smile esthetics.

About

Orthodontist, educator and researcher

I specialize in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics and teach in the Department of Orthodontics, Pediatric and Community Dentistry at the University of Sharjah. My path has combined clinical orthodontic practice in Riyadh with university teaching in Dubai and Sharjah.

My doctoral work in Dental Sciences, supervised by Prof. Ahmad Hamdan and co-supervised by Prof. Zahi Badran, asks a focused question: does measuring how a smile moves — not just how it looks in a single photograph — help predict how orthodontists, dentists and the public perceive it?

Doctoral research

The AI-Assisted Comprehensive Smile Esthetic Index (AI-SEI)

Twelve prespecified measurements from a standardized frontal photograph and a 10-second posed-smile video, combined into an interpretable model and tested against independent ratings.

5

Clinical

Smile arc, buccal corridor, gingival display, dental midline, gingival zenith symmetry.

3

Facial

Eye-line angle, lower-face proportion, commissure height symmetry.

4

Temporal

Commissure excursion, onset-to-peak time, left/right onset lag, change in tooth display.

Status: proposal stage. Data collection begins only after research-ethics and site approvals. No results are reported yet.

Mabsam

The research platform behind the AI-SEI

Mabsam turns a standardized photograph and a short smile video into a transparent set of measurements — each one labelled as automated, manual-assisted or not measurable.

  1. 1
    Upload — frontal rest and peak-smile photographs plus a 10-second posed-smile video.
  2. 2
Analyze — facial landmarks and head stabilization run in the browser; dental points are marked by the examiner.
  3. 3
Review — a participant report of all twelve measurements, with quality flags and exports.
